Tom Williams Cup Gala – 2019!
On Saturday 29 June 2019 DSC hosted The Tom Williams Cup once again. Held at the Saxon Pool in Biggleswade, this gala was to commemorate an exceptional young man, who remains greatly missed by everyone. This gala is arguably our most important fixture on the swimming calendar for DSC as this competition over everything else, is for Tom and continues to mean so much to so many.
DSC invited along Flitwick Dolphins, Aylesbury Vale, Henley, Linslade Crusaders and Kings Langley, so it promised to be an outstanding and very competitive night of racing!
From the outset the huge crowd of spectators were spellbound as one by one the racing got more and more intense and the volume poolside was deafening! Showing some exceptional team spirit DSC pulled out some magical relays, and some really awe inspiring individual events too. Crusaders also pulled out all the stops with their team, and produced some exceptional swims, gaining over 20 1st place positions! The win eventually came from Crusaders – very well done to them. A special mention also goes to Kings Langley SC, whose team showed some brilliant support and huge team spirit with each other. Other clubs including DSC congratulated them on this…
Truly amazing swims from DSC and the other supporting teams with final results as follows;
Number of 1st place positions = 8 Number of 2nd place positions = 14
Final scores after 51 events were as follows;
- 1st place – Linslade Crusaders – 251
2nd place – Dunstable – 216
3rd place – Flitwick Dolphins – 209
4th place – Aylesbury Vale – 207
- 5th place – Henley – 128
- 6th place – Kings Langley – 72
There were also many new club PB’s achieved on the night, so well done to everyone that competed.
A huge part of tonight’s gala was the fund raising. A donation is to be made to CHUMS charity. CHUMS is a mental health and emotional wellbeing service for children and young people in Bedfordshire. They provide support to 1,800 children and their families every year. DSC are pleased and proud to be able to make a donation to this extremely worthwhile charity. A huge thanks also goes to Aylesbury Vale SC who have very kindly decided to also make a separate donation to CHUMS – we are all extremely grateful and thank them for their generosity.
DSC would like to thank all the volunteers who have officiated, raised funds on the night or assisted in any way. Without all these contributions, these galas would not be as successful as they always are. They would also like to thank everyone for their donations of raffle prizes and cakes and biscuits. Above all thanks to all the teams that agreed to compete on what was an extremely hot summers night, this truly was a brilliant competition.
Finally thank you to the DSC squad that swam their hearts out on the night, no one could have asked more from you!
