Senior Regional Champs 2018 (Weekend 1)
Six of our sensational senior swimmers recently attended the summer regional championships, held in Norwich’s long course pool over the weekend 5-7 May 2018. For those waiting in anticipation at home, we were in for a treat when results starting to come in via Twitter over the weekend! Supporters went wild when we heard of Michael Judd and Walter Hackett in finals, and to learn we were 9th out of 26 teams on day 2 in the medal table – finishing 10th overall out of 30 teams by the end of day 3, with no less than 3 gold medals from Walter, it was a very special regional championships for DSC. A massive well done to everyone!
All six of our seniors put in knock out performances, the results for each are below;
All eyes on Walter Hackett aged just 15. He is proving he is a force to be reckoned with in the backstroke. With 3 gold medals in this champs, and a recent selection for Swim England’s East Region World Class Development Day, we are all excited for Walter’s swimming future.
50m backstroke – 28.99 (huge achievement to break the 29 second barrier and qualifies in 1st place for the final!!), 100m Breaststroke – 1.18.04, 100m Freestyle – 59.84. 50m Backstroke final, wins by over a second 28.39 PB and Gold!!!!!! Making him No.4 in GB National Champ Rankings, and achieving a new Bedfordshire Junior County Record!! 50m Freestyle 28.14. 200m backstroke 1.06.22 at the turn!! showing a masterclass of a swim! Ends 2.18.41 into the final with a big PB!! 50m Breaststroke – 34.94. 200m backstroke final – 1.05.68 at the turn. Wins the Gold in a time of 2.15.49!!! and is now 14th in GB rankings with this race. 100m Backstroke – 1.02.12 winning his heat and into a 3rd final!! 50m Butterfly – 30.19. 100m backstroke final – Wins Gold!!! 1.02.05 and 11th on GB rankings.
Amazing news just in – Walter has been selected to represent the East Region International Development Team at the Scottish Open Championship!! This will see him compete side by side with GB and other international swimmers in Glasgow next month. Everyone has a close eye on this boy! Massive well done Walter!
Michael has had an exceptional regionals, fully prepared for these champs as he has trained really hard and has been focused for many months. His determination paid off, as we can see from two finals that he qualified for.
50m Backstroke – 29.50 a smashing swim from him. 100m Breaststroke – 1.13.00 A great swim with a quick turnaround. 100m Freestyle – 57.97 A very determined swim! 50m freestyle 27.41but unfortunately a DQ, Michael knew this even before it was announced, but still a learning curve. 200m backstroke 1.05.89 at the turn, but then steps up the gas. Ends 2.14.36 what a swim, and enough to make the final!! 50m Breaststroke 32.64. 200m backstroke final – 7th place 2.14.91, and a massive hearty swim! 200IM – 2.16.06 massive gutsy PB swim, and puts him in 4th place going into yet another final!! 100m Backstroke – 1.03.90 hurting at the 75m mark, but still a very respectable 12th place out of 23 swimmers! 50m Butterfly – 28.35. 200IM Final – 7th place 2.17.77. A sensational weekend Michael – well done.
Sam’s usual determined and focused approach placed him in a fantastic position to start his championships. Hardworking as always – well done Sam.
100m Breaststroke 1.16.07 great swimming and against some local rivals! Sam achieved over a half a second L/C PB in this race and improved his position in the results by 11 places within his age group from 2017! A massive achievement! 50m Breaststroke – Sam has a real presence on the block now achieving 34.14 with great streamlining and skills. Outsweep looked efficient throughout. Great effort and technique. Sam was just off his L/C PB in this 50m, but his position improved by 7 places from last year – well done Sam!
The only girl in this senior squad, Maia showed her power in her fabulous breaststroke she just gets better and better – Well done Maia.
50m Breaststroke 38.13 a great flat start, a great swim! 100m Breaststroke – 1.23.86 a massive 3 second PB from counties in January to regionals in May – Outstanding swimming Maia – massive well done from all at DSC and showing real girl power!!
Ollie experienced quite a nasty ankle injury during winter 2017 and into 2018, that did hinder his training. Despite this, he still qualified for regionals and produced a gutsy swim. Very well done Ollie.
50m Freestyle 28.14 – A gutsy swim from Ollie well done.
Will’s breaststroke just goes from strength to strength. Going from age groupers into men’s is always a massive leap for any swimmer, but Will has made the transition effortless and is producing some sensational swims – well done.
100m Breaststroke – 1.15.12 What progress Will has shown in 6 months!! 200m Breaststroke 1.18.01 at the 100m mark, stroke shortening in the last 100m. finishes 2.49.28 hard fought swim with a determined opening. 50m Breaststroke 34.14 exactly the same time as Sam! Well done Will fantastic effort!
Director of Swimming Tim Hutton said ” An awesome regionals for DSC reaching new heights without a pool to call our own is a major achievement. We have a great group of volunteers, coaches, parents and committee members supporting the club to maintain our performances at this level. Huge well done to all the swimmers involved”.
DSC are looking forward to the Junior Regional Champs, being held at Inspire in Luton over the weekend of 26-28 May 2018.
