Inaugural 'Skins' a great success

For the first time at this year’s club championship, a “Skins” event was introduced on that last evening of the championships. For those who are new to this event, the “skins” is a knock-out event where the fastest six swimmers in the 50m freestyle event are invited to race. Each heat is swum every 3 minutes, with the last person eliminated until only two swimmers remain. The final two swimmers then battle it out to find the Skins champion. It’s about tactics as well as speed, as the swimmers will want to conserve energy for the later heats. As the heats continue and swimmers eliminated, the excitement (and noise!) builds up to the final.

This years “Skins” proved very exciting and some great racing was seen. In the Junior Girls races (12 and under), Jodie Harris came through to win with a fine display of sprinting to beat Any Harris in the Final. Ryan Drawbridge and Mackenzie Ridout had a fantastic battle in the Junior Boys event, with Ryan coming through to win. The Senior Girls race (13 and over) was an extremely close affair with Emily Ridout  and Laura Condon only separated by a finger nail, luckily for Emily, her finger nails were slightly longer!. The Senior Boys was an equally close affair with Ryan Currell and Joe Geraerts sprinting it out to a tight finish with Ryan coming through to claim the trophy.
All in all, the “Skins” proved to be an exciting finale to the Club Championships and will be a permanent fixture in the future.
