DSC’s Walter Hackett Awesome at Summer Nationals!

Having claimed the top 14-year-old swimmer award at the Beds County Championships in February, Walter then won gold in the 100m and 200m backstroke, plus silver in the 50m event at the East Region Championships in Norwich in May.

That saw the top 24 swimmers in each age group in Great Britain invited to the British Summer Championships (British Nationals in Sheffield) and the next 24 for the Home Nations (English Nationals also in Sheffield).

At the Summer Champs, held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, Walter was 12th in the 50m backstroke heat (29.79secs), plus 17th in the 100m heat in 1.05.20mins. He has now headed back to Sheffield on Sunday 6th August for the English Nationals, where he swam in the 200m backstroke event.  Showing a really gutsy swim Walter came in in 14th place overall, in a time of 2.22.97, just outside Walter’s personal best but only just achieved in May at the Regional Championships.

Walter’s form can be put down to his training schedule, as he swims up to six times a week.  Despite the closure of Dunstable Leisure Centre, everyone at DSC are still very much commited and motivated to achieve the very best for all of our swimmers hence a number of locations in order to train from.  A big focus has been on Walter during this summer as he has been working in a very high competitive period in his swimming.  Everyone at DSC congratulate Walter on all his achievements this summer, and are very much looking forward to what the new swimming season brings in September 2017.
